Are you eligible to work in a student job? The following information includes basic guidelines for eligibility for student employment at the University of Alabama. Individual departments, programs or employers may have additional requirements for employment.

On-Campus Jobs
Student Assistant jobs are on-campus jobs funded through UA departmental budgets, and eligibility is not based on financial need. Eligible students may apply and interview for available positions, which are posted year-round on the UA Student Jobsite. Minimally, graduate and undergraduate students must be enrolled in a degree program at UA, and meet the following credit hour requirements during the academic year (fall and spring semesters) to work as a Student Assistant. Individual hiring departments and programs may also have additional eligibility requirements, including minimum GPA, completion of credit hours or coursework, class level, etc.


Undergraduate Students

  • Must be enrolled in a UA degree program
  • Must be registered for at least 6 credit hours during fall/spring semesters

Graduate Students

  • Must be enrolled in a UA degree program
  • Must be registered for at least 4.5 credit hours during fall/spring semesters

International Students

  • Must be in lawful F-1 or J-1 status. Visit Capstone International Services - On-Campus Employment Rules for additional information.
  • Must be enrolled in a UA degree program
  • Must be registered as a full-time UA student (undergraduate = 12 credit hours, graduate = 9 credit hours) during fall/spring semesters

Incoming Freshmen and Transfer Students

  • Must be accepted into a UA degree program
  • Must have a CWID number
  • Must have completed registration for at least 6 credit hours for first fall/spring semester

Enrollment requirements must be maintained for the duration of employment as a Student Assistant. Students that drop classes or otherwise change enrollment status and no longer meet the appropriate credit hour requirements must notify their supervisor immediately.

It is recommended that all students working in on-campus positions be limited to a total of 20 hours per week during the fall and spring semesters. Students may work up to 40 hours per week during academic breaks and summer semester(s).

 

Off-Campus Jobs
Off-campus jobs are available to all students, regardless of financial need or enrollment status. While these jobs can provide valuable field experience and networking opportunities for students seeking early career related job experience, they are best suited to those who have reliable transportation and time in their schedules to work assigned hours, which may include nights and weekends.

Undergraduate & Graduate Students

  • No enrollment or credit hour requirements

International Students

  • International students (F-1 or J-1 visa holders) are generally prohibited from working off-campus without appropriate work authorization. Contact Capstone International Services for more information.

UA does not set limitations on the number of hours students can work in off-campus positions, but recommends that students carefully consider their academic obligations before accepting any job that has a demanding work schedule or would otherwise interfere with academic progress.
